Introduction

Drama may be the most exciting form of literature. We'll be reading plays, because that's what's available to us to do. But plays weren't meant for reading. They were meant to be staged. This nature of drama has at least two implications for us:

First, I encourage you to use whatever videos you can get your hands on to get a feel for what these plays would be like on stage. In a live class, we would be watching video together. Since that's not possible, try to rent whatever versions you can. More information will be provided in Blackboard.

Second, one of your course requirements is to attend a play and write a paper about it. Students have found this one of the most satisfying activities of the whole course. Some students have never, or rarely been to a play, so it's an interesting new experience.

You can do this assignment at any point during the semester, preferably after we've finished the short story section (so you have some basic concepts to apply to the play). Please check out the theaters near you. I will provide as much information about Maine theater schedules as I can, but it's primarily your responsibility to locate a production.
